HOW TO KEEP YOUR TOOTH ENAMEL HEALTHY

« Back to Articles

Our teeth are coated by a layer known as “enamel”. This enamel is what helps prevent cavities and the decay that occurs over time. It is important to take steps to protect the enamel because if it is weakened, it can lead to various dental issues. Incorporate these steps in your daily routine to keep your tooth enamel as healthy as possible.

Get enough calcium

Calcium is a mineral that helps keep your enamel strong. Many dairy products, such as yogurt and cheese, are rich in calcium. If you do not consume dairy products, there are many other foods with added calcium that you can include in your diet.

Lower your sugar intake

Eating sugar promotes bacterial growth in our mouths, which in turn produces acids that damage the tooth enamel. For example, a good practice is to replace sugary drinks with water.

Use fluoride

Fluoride, a mineral that protects the enamel and helps prevent cavities, can be found in many toothpastes and mouthwashes. Read the ingredients on your oral care products to make sure they contain fluoride.

Visit your doctor if you suffer from heartburn

If you persistently experience heartburn or reflux, the acids from your stomach could reach your mouth and erode the tooth enamel. Ask your doctor to recommend alternative treatments to keep your heartburn under control.

Visit your dentist regularly

Damage caused by weak enamel tends to occur over a long period of time. Visiting your dentist every 6 months can help identify enamel problems before they cause major damage. Preventing enamel damage is much better than having to repair it.
